Apple announced back in July that they would be switching to
intel processors next year to take the macs to a whole new level. This week
they released the new ipod video, the revised imac and the new powermacs featuring
dual core technology. The dual processors now reside on a single chip, creatingt
he room int he top end mac for a quad processor, extremely fast!
Has anyone ordered a g5 dual core or got one, used one? I want to hear from
you please. Many designers, video editors, etc are all eager to hear the views
of the first users.
I'm a graphic designer trying to make the decision whether to upgrade my 400mhz
g4 Mac with a new 3rd party processor and wait for the intelmacs, or to buy
a new 'just released g5 dual core powermac now...
I'm thinking, will there be yet another release of the dual cores before the
intels? The 2.3ghz is currently a single core but could be made a quad eventually
for the same price...
I guess this is what has happened to the ipod users, or the mac mini users,
they bought mac mini, then it got replaced with the nano, now theres the new
pod video much thinner and bigger capacity (I sometimes wonder who has 60gb
of music - I don't know anyone with that much!!! You'd have to be away from
home for a long time to listen to that lot!)
I THINK I'm going to go for the 2.3ghz dual core as that is fast and MUCH faster
than what I have. I tested Photoshop etcon the 2.3 dual processor mac when it
was in the apple store and it opens 300-400mb files without even showing the
progress bar!
Now the core processor 2.3 is supposed to apparently be as fast as the original
2.5 dual.
There is also the quad, which I would love but I have to leave myself money
for ram, and sometimes I think we have to stop and think what we are using the
computer for. I don't do 3d, or music, I do 2d graphic design and web design...
I don't necessarily need a quad.
I think some of us will reach the stage where in the work we are doing we wouldn't
be able to tell if we had a 2.3 or a quad...because most designers files are
less than 300mb each for normal work, magazines etc in photoshop! So if the
2.3 opens without a progress bar and filters are rapid, then would the power
of a quad be used?! and the cost justified?
A few years ago we upgraded and just saw the progress bar move faster, now we
don't even see it on some files, so I think that the future macs with even more
speed are only going to be FULLY appreciated by those doing the most intensive
work such as video editing and music.
I don't see anyone talking from this prospective on any mac forums, I'd appreciate
views from other mac users on what I've said.
Finally, I'd just like to add, powermacs are not due to be transfered to intel
until 2007, and then who would risk buyingt he first generation? Maybe they
wont be out of the buggy period until 2008... by which time a g5 i buy now will
be ready for an upgrade and still have some of its value. After all, my g4 which
i paid £1100 for 5 years ago is still fetching £250 on ebay! The
airport origional card alone is gold dust worth £100!
